Carpet that runs through the whole house

Rhino technician cleaning carpet, Evanston and the North Shore

Wall-to-wall carpet in a Naperville home rarely stops at one room. It climbs the staircase, runs along the upstairs hall and covers every bedroom, while the main floor takes the heaviest traffic from kids, pets and the back door. That means more square footage than a city apartment, and often more than one kind of carpet under one roof. A soft plush in a bedroom, a looped berber in a basement and a hard-wearing cut pile on the stairs can all turn up in one house. We don’t clean all of it the same way, and the first thing we do at your door is find out what each carpet is made of.

What your carpet is made of changes how we clean it

Before any water touches the floor we identify the fiber and run a colorfast test on a hidden spot. The fiber decides the solution, the water temperature and how much moisture the carpet can take.
  • Nylon — the most common and the most forgiving. It handles hot water extraction well and gives up traffic-lane soil readily.
  • Polyester and recycled PET — hold their color well, but oily soil clings to them. They get a stronger pre-treatment in the traffic lanes and a full rinse so no residue is left behind.
  • Olefin (polypropylene) — grabs oil and re-soils fast if any cleaning product stays in the pile, and its fibers can turn shiny if they’re overheated. We keep the temperature moderate and never skip the rinse pass.
  • Wool — the most delicate carpet we see. It gets a pH-neutral cleaner, cooler water and minimal moisture, because hot water and harsh cleaners can shrink or yellow it. A wool carpet that is badly worn and heavily soiled we may advise against cleaning rather than risk the damage.
The way the carpet is woven matters too. Looped berber traps pet hair inside each loop, so it takes noticeably longer to dry-vacuum properly before any wet work. Cut-pile styles like plush, frieze and Saxony get groomed after cleaning so the pile stands up and dries evenly without leaving marks.

Two cleaning methods, and how we choose

Hot water extraction

is our standard, and it's what most people mean by "steam cleaning." A professional portable extractor pushes heated solution into the pile under pressure and pulls it straight back out with strong suction. It's followed by a neutralizing rinse and grooming. Typical dry time is 6–12 hours, and our Fast Dry add-on with air movers brings that down to 4–6.

Low-moisture cleaning (encapsulation)

uses a fraction of the water. We switch to it for wool, for fibers that can't take heavy wetting, and for upstairs rooms where too much moisture could reach the ceiling of the room below. It also suits a room you need back in use quickly.

What we don’t use is a true steam generator. Real steam runs far hotter than carpet fiber should see, and it risks shrinking and distorting the pile. We decide between the two methods once the fiber check is done, and tell you why before we start. The full step-by-step process — dry vacuum, pre-treatment, dwell time, extraction, rinse and grooming — is on our main page: how we clean carpet, step by step.

Stairs and upstairs rooms

Stairs are cleaned by hand, one step at a time, with a dedicated stair tool, because a floor wand can’t reach the nose and riser of each tread. They’re priced per stair and per landing in the table above. Upstairs, we control the moisture so nothing reaches the ceiling below. Before we leave we’ll tell you when you can walk on the carpet again. Give it a full day before the furniture goes back, because wood and metal legs on damp carpet can leave rust or finish stains.

Carpet or area rug?

If it’s installed wall to wall, it’s this service, and we clean it in place. A loose rug is a different job. It gets washed whole at our facility with free pickup and delivery. That service has its own page: area rug cleaning in Naperville. Booking both? We clean the carpet under the rug during the same visit the rug is collected. For a sofa that has picked up the same smell, there’s upholstery cleaning in Naperville.

What a carpet clean can't fix

Some problems aren't dirt. We point them out at the inspection, before the cleaning starts:

Pet urine in the pad

When urine has soaked below the carpet into the cushion underneath, a surface clean can't flush it out, and the smell tends to come back as the carpet dries. What works then is extraction through the pad with a sub-surface tool, or a new piece of pad.

Bleach spots, burns and tears

These are damage to the fiber, and cleaning can't reverse them.

Loose or rippled carpet

We don't stretch or repair carpet.

Flooding and mold

Water-damage extraction and mold remediation are specialist work, and we'll refer you to the right company.

Frequently asked questions

We now have an FAQ list that we hope will help you answer some of the more common ones/
Our carpet is wool — can you clean it in the house?

Usually, yes. Wall-to-wall wool is cleaned in place with a pH-neutral, wool-safe cleaner, cooler water and minimal moisture. We often use low-moisture cleaning, because heat and wrong chemistry are what shrink or yellow wool. If the carpet is very worn and heavily soiled, we'll say whether cleaning is likely to help before we begin.

Yes. In a two-story home that's the usual scope of the job. Tell us the number of stairs, landings and rooms when you book so we plan enough time. Stairs are cleaned by hand with a stair tool, and upstairs rooms get controlled moisture so nothing reaches the ceiling below.

It depends on the fiber. Nylon, polyester and most olefin get hot water extraction, which people usually call steam cleaning. It's hot water and solution under pressure, extracted straight back out, not actual steam. Wool and moisture-sensitive carpet get low-moisture cleaning. We check the fiber first and tell you which method we're using and why
