Expert & Safe Leather Furniture Cleaning Chicago

Bring your leather sofas and chairs back to a soft, clean, well-conditioned finish. Our specialists hand-clean finished, bonded and faux leather - no steam, no extractor.

The Dangers of Neglected Leather Upholstery

Your leather sofa is a major investment. However, over time, the leather absorbs body oils, perspiration, pet dander, and cooking grease, particularly on armrests and cushions. This accumulation strips the leather’s protective barrier, leading to premature drying, cracking, and permanent discoloration.

Leather is a separate, hand-only service in our lineup. We use non-toxic, pH-balanced leather chemistry to lift embedded grime without stripping the finish, then condition the piece before we leave.

The Leather We Take - and What We Don't

We clean finished, protected, bonded and faux leather. We don't take genuine suede, nubuck or cowhide - and recoloring or crack repair is furniture restoration, a different trade. If your piece is fabric rather than leather, that's our upholstery cleaning. Not sure which leather you have? We check on-site before we start.

Chicago winters are hard on leather

Central heating pulls moisture from the air — and from your leather. During a long heating season, armrests and headrests dry out faster, absorb body oils deeper, and start to crack earlier than in milder climates. That’s why we recommend conditioning every 12–18 months here, and why the conditioning step is never skipped.

Why leather is cleaned by hand

Leather isn’t fabric, and it isn’t cleaned like fabric. An extractor is built to push water through a material and pull it back out – exactly what a leather coating shouldn’t go through. So the whole job is done by hand: leather chemistry worked in with microfiber in small sections, lifted back off before it can sit, then conditioner once the surface is clean. It’s slower than machine work, but hand pressure is the only way to feel how the leather is responding and adjust as you go.

How much conditioner a piece needs is a judgment call we make on-site: newer leather may only want a single pass, while a dry, older sofa keeps drinking it in, layer after layer, before the surface looks right again. We stop when the leather stops absorbing – that, more than the cleaning itself, is what buys a leather piece extra years.

Frequently Asked Questions About Leather Sofa Cleaning in Chicago

Rhino Service is a trusted name for professional leather furniture cleaning in Chicago. We understand the specific care valuable leather sofas, sectionals and chairs need - and regular cleaning and conditioning is what keeps leather from cracking early and losing its value.

How often should I have my leather furniture professionally cleaned and conditioned?

We recommend having your leather sofas and chairs professionally cleaned and conditioned every 12 to 18 months. This schedule is crucial in the Chicago area to counteract the moisture loss caused by indoor heating in winter and the oil buildup from daily use, which prevents the leather from drying out and cracking.

The cleaning and conditioning process typically takes about 1 to 3 hours per furniture piece (e.g., a standard sofa). The drying time is minimal, usually allowing you to safely use your furniture again within a few hours of completion.

Absolutely not. We use only pH-balanced and non-toxic solutions designed specifically for leather upholstery. We always conduct a discreet test on your furniture first to ensure the color remains perfectly stable before proceeding with the full cleaning.

Always included. Conditioning isn't an upsell - cleaning slightly dries the leather, so we finish every job by working conditioner into the leather in several layers to replenish moisture and protect against cracking. It's simply part of the service.

In most cases, no — and we'd rather be honest than attempt it. Marker, ink and paint often can't be lifted from leather without damaging the finish or spreading the stain. If that's your situation, describe it when you enquire and we'll tell you up front what's realistic.

Never. Steam and water extraction are damaging to leather — they dry out the coating, cause water marks and can alter the color. We clean by hand using leather-specific chemistry and a soft horsehair brush. The result is a thorough clean without putting the finish at risk.

Cleaning and conditioning will refresh the surface and slow further drying, but existing cracks won't disappear — that's restoration, not cleaning. We'll tell you honestly what the result is likely to look like before we start.

We can, with caution. Bonded leather (pressed leather composite) can peel during cleaning if it's already delaminating. We inspect it first and let you know if there's a risk before we touch it.
