Is it "steam cleaning"? Hot water extraction, explained

What most people call steam cleaning is hot water extraction. Hot water and cleaning solution are pushed into the carpet pile under pressure, then immediately vacuumed back out — pulling the loosened soil with them. There’s no standing steam sitting in your carpet. Done correctly, it reaches deep without over-wetting the backing, so your carpet dries in hours, not days.

What carpet cleaning can - and can't - reach

We’d rather set the right expectation up front. Surface stains and traffic-lane soil clean up well. But pet urine that has soaked through the carpet into the pad and subfloor can wick back up after drying — no top-down cleaning fully removes it. If that’s your situation, we’ll tell you before we start and walk you through the realistic options.

Professional carpet cleaning across Chicago and the suburbs, done in the right order: dry vacuuming before any moisture, targeted pre-treatment, extraction under pressure – and honest advice up front about what will and won’t come out. Wall-to-wall carpet we clean in place; a loose area rug is a different service with an off-site wash. Book online in a couple of minutes, seven days a week.

Our Carpet Cleaning Process

Inspection & fiber check

We identify carpet type (nylon, polyester, olefin, wool), check backing condition and note any existing damage before we start — and photograph it.

Colorfastness test

On dark or bright carpets we test a hidden area first to ensure cleaning won't cause color bleed.

Dry vacuuming

About 80% of carpet soil is dry. We remove it before introducing any moisture - skipping this step is the most common mistake cheaper services make.

Pre-spray & stain treatment

An organic pre-spray loosens embedded soil; individual stains get targeted treatment matched to their type - tannin, protein, oil or pet-based.

Dwell time

We let the solution work for 5-10 minutes. This does the heavy lifting so extraction doesn't require aggressive scrubbing.

Hot water extraction

Hot water under pressure flushes soil out of the pile; the extractor immediately pulls it back out along with the moisture.

Rinse pass

A neutralizing rinse removes chemical residue from the fiber.. Without this step carpets re-soil faster - another common shortcut.

Grooming & drying

We groom the pile for even drying and set up air movers if needed. Standard dry time: 6-12 hours.

What a lot of carpet cleaners get wrong

Most of the callbacks we get after a cheap clean come down to the same shortcuts: too much product with no rinse-out (the residue pulls new dirt in, so the carpet looks worse again within weeks), one all-purpose spray for every stain (why some marks only half-lift), and over-wetting the pad (where the problems you see days later start). We don’t cut those corners – it’s the difference you notice a month after we leave.

What brings Chicago homeowners to us

In Chicago, the winter's salt, slush and grit get walked straight into entry carpets and traffic lanes - which is why a deep extraction in spring makes such a visible difference. Road and sidewalk salt is alkaline, and hot water alone tends to set that white residue rather than lift it. So we neutralize it first with an acidic pre-treatment, then extract - the extra step that stops the salt crystals from cutting into the fiber over the winter. Skipping it is why salted entryway carpet often looks hazy even after a clean.

Move-out cleaning with a deposit deadline

we work around your schedule and give you a result the landlord can't argue with.

Pet urine in homes with dogs and cats

Chicago has a high share of pet-friendly buildings, and pet accidents need treatment matched to how deep they've gone - enzyme work in the pile, and a straight answer when it's reached the padding.

Post-renovation dust

drywall dust and construction debris settle deep into the pile and require extra pre-vacuum and pre-spray passes.

Wicking after a DIY attempt

if a rental machine or store product left rings or brought stains back up after drying, we'll find the cause and re-clean it properly.

If the odor has spread beyond the carpet – into the sofa or an area rug – tell us when you book and we’ll treat every affected surface in one visit.

Frequently asked questions

We now have an FAQ list that we hope will help you answer some of the more common ones

Should I try to clean a fresh spill myself before you arrive?

Blot, don't rub - press a clean white cloth straight down to lift the spill, because rubbing spreads it and works it deeper into the fiber. A few things to avoid: don't pour hot water on protein spills like blood, milk or egg (heat cooks the protein into the fiber and can set it permanently), don't reach for household bleach (that's fiber damage, not cleaning, and it's usually not reversible), and skip the vinegar-and-baking-soda trick - it throws off the carpet's pH and can leave it yellowing and re-soiling later. Blot, keep it damp, and let us handle the rest.

That's wicking. Rental and store machines put a lot of water down but don't have the vacuum lift to pull it all back out, so moisture and dissolved soil sink into the backing and pad, then travel back up to the surface as it dries - bringing the stain with it. Over-wetting can also lead to browning and odor. Bring us in and we'll extract properly this time and re-clean it the right way.

If it's still in the carpet pile - usually yes: an enzyme treatment breaks down what causes both the stain and the smell. Once urine has reached the pad underneath, it's a different job - the realistic options there are sub-surface extraction or replacing that section of pad, and surface cleaning alone won't hold. We inspect first and tell you which situation you have.

Usually, yes - salt residue just needs its own pre-treatment step before extraction, and we run that step on salted entryways as standard in the cold months. If your carpet catches heavy winter foot traffic, late winter or early spring is the smartest time for a deep clean, once the tracking season is over.

Typical dry time is 6-12 hours with hot water extraction, and we can set up air movers to speed that up. Season matters in Chicago: dry winter heating and summer A/C dry it faster, while damp fall days run longer. Stay off it in shoes until it's dry, and wait about 24 hours before moving furniture back - metal and wood legs on a still-damp carpet can leave rust marks or stains.

Wall-to-wall carpet we clean in place, in your home. A loose area rug is a different job with an off-site wash - we pick it up and deliver it back free of charge, and you can see the details on our area rug cleaning page. If a rug is lying on top of the carpet you're booking, mention it when you book and we'll handle both in one arrangement rather than two.
